What's new in 2022

Updated: Oct 18, 2022

Thanks to everyone who has continued to support SoLR as it becomes established and a huge welcome to our latest members, who bring our membership to 122. Our first update in 2022 includes draft plans for events and social opportunities, confirmed events and an update on our apprenticeship which we hope will attract new colleagues into our industry later this year.

We have a new 'Community Committee' who are pleased to inform members about some great events we are planning throughout 2022. Our Community Committee will be in charge of activities which fall under our community pillar.

During 2022, SoLR is planning three Land Referencing community networking events, a variety of webinars and talks and will signpost you to relevant CPD opportunities which will be relevant to all members and all levels of experience.

2022 Draft Programme of Events

Our Community Committee have asked SoLR members for their feedback via a short survey on the following ideas:

SoLR Community Committee:

Josh Brown, Alex Crow & Ben Joss

If you have any feedback or suggestions or if you’d like to join Josh, Alex and Ben on the committee, please email:

Upcoming Events

Professional Recognition: Chartered Geographer for Land Referencers

It's never too early to start planning for professional accreditation. Chartered Geographer is an accessible and relevant option for those working in Land Referencing and Land Assembly, including GIS.

Chartered Geographer is the Royal Geographical Society's professional accreditation for those using their geographical skills, knowledge and understanding in the workplace. Join this session to learn more about the RGS, early careers and the benefits of becoming Chartered, the framework of competencies and CPD.

This session will be led by James Kendall from the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG).

Free - Open to all members - suitable for all levels of experience

SoLR Social - Birmingham

Join colleagues from across the industry for our first in-person social of the year, in Birmingham. Location is being confirmed, but it will be central Birmingham.

Free - Open to all members - suitable for all levels of experience - limited free drinks

We are also signposting relevant events and CPD opportunities, including free lectures from the RGS (with IBG). Keep an eye on our Events pages.

You can now add our events calendar into your Outlook by subscribing to our ical here

Land Referencer Apprenticeship Launched

We officially launched the Level 4 Land Referencer Apprenticeship on Monday 7 February during National Apprenticeship Week, with the first vacancies being advertised.

Trevor Wilding, Sheoma Richards and Vincente de Faria represented SoLR and the land referencing industry at the NCATI open evening on Wed 9th in Birmingham to promote land referencing careers and meet potential candidates. We are collecting contact details for potential candidates and alerting them as new vacancies are posted.

The apprenticeship was highlighted through a joint press release from Mark Thurston (former apprentice and CEO at HS2) and HS2 Minister Andrew Stephenson MP (see Rail Technology Magazine article here). A big thanks to SoLR members and past apprentices George Hutton and Nathan McCarthy for sharing their experiences and helping bring the role to life.

Our Apprenticeship Pages offer advice and resources for employers and candidates and we are advertising all apprenticeship vacancies on our Careers page.
