Professional Engagement & Community:
First ever land referencing conference, and London networking event
Tickets to the SoLR Land With Certainty Conference have gone on sale today. As this is first ever land referencing and professional geography conference, tickets will be limited for what we expect to be an annual conference.
Tickets are available for the conference as well as our London evening networking reception, both being held on 24 October. Tickets are discounted for SoLR members.
The Land With Certainty Conference has been organised by the SoLR Professional Engagement Sub-committee, in partnership with the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) and the evening reception has been arranged by our Community Sub-committee.
We are very grateful to Ardent, Bruton Knowles, Mott MacDonald, Terraquest and WSP for sponsoring what we expect to be an annual event.
Full details of the conference are available here:
We had a really strong turn out for our Birmingham networking event on 3 July, with a BBQ and drinks in the sun.
Well done to everyone who helped clean up their local area in Birmingham in support of Clean Air Day in June. This is our second year of supporting this initiative, bringing groups together to volunteer within local communities.
Standards & Ethics: SoLR participation in industry consultations
In order to ensure that SoLR’s voice is heard in industry consultations, the SoLR Standards & Ethics Committee has developed a protocol for considering advertised consultations and for developing and submitting response. We have tested this approach by submitting a responses to the recent ‘Infrastructure (Wales) Bill - Pre-application consultation requirements’ consultation. Our response promotes the employment of land referencing techniques in consultations by making the case for identifying all landed stakeholders by name to ensure none are excluded, and by promoting the use of GIS and associated online communications.
As our mechanism for responding to industry consultation matures, the Standards & Ethics Committee hopes to involve SoLR members in the identification of consultations that potential merit a responses and in the development of these responses. Members may then reflect SoLR’s response in any individual responses they or their employers may wish to make. Members are therefore invited to forward any invitations for participation industry consultations they believe might usefully be considered by SoLR. Once identified, these should be sent as early as possible to chair@solr.org.uk. The Standards & Ethics Committee will then consider and, if it decides it is appropriate to participate in the consultation, seek out any appropriate volunteers to help develop the draft response.
Ethical Partnership Policy
The SoLR Board has recently adopted a new Ethical Partnership policy, as proposed and prepared by the Standards and Ethics Committee. This policy sets out SoLR's ethical guidelines and best practices to follow regarding its partnerships and associations with third parties. It also describes how the process of consideration of the suitability of partners will be conducted. This will give SoLR members and others the reassurance that SoLR is associated with third parties that will not compromise the standards required to maintain SoLR’s professional standing and provide SoLR members with a mechanism to raise any concerns in the knowledge that appropriate action will result to resolve concerns. The Standards and Ethics Committee continues to go from strength to strength, collaboratively drafting and developing the standards which will sit at the heart of land referencing practice.
Can you help shape our future?
We are looking for more members to work as part of the Standards and Ethics Committee and help shape future policy and technical standards. This may be in the form of specific subject working groups and would provide valuable CPD. Please contact chair@solr.org.uk if you would like to be involved.
