Preparing for a conference
Following SoLR’s first Industry workshop in June 2023, the Professional Engagement Sub-Committee was established in December 2023. The 5 committee members have already made a promising start, discussing priorities which will being a benefit to the wider membership, and organising webinars and events for SoLR’s members. This is with the aim to support the Society’s members to grow their own professional network, as well as further knowledge of land referencing and its importance in developments and projects.
Royal Geographical Society Engagement
In 2024, the professional engagement sub-committee has chosen to prioritise engagement with the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), where connections already exist such as Ashley Parry-Jones’ role as Vice President – Professional. Numerous other SoLR members also already have an affiliation with the RGS, being members, fellows and achieving Chartered Geographer status. To kick this off, Sam McAleese and Ashley Parry-Jones chaired an introductory webinar with the RGS on 25th January for SoLR members to give a broader view of what the RGS can offer to SoLR members and the benefits of being members of both throughout your career stages. For those that may have missed this webinar, you can watch a recording by clicking below (and don't forget to record it in your CPD log).
2024 SoLR Conference – support required
With the view to continue promoting land referencing and provide opportunities for the wider Society to expand their professional networks, the sub-committee has begun planning for a joint conference with the RGS in their London Society building in October. This conference is proposed to be an opportunity for SoLR members to engage with wider professional industry, as well as providing a number of speakers on important topics in land referencing and professional geographical practices.
Preliminary discussions have already started and the sub-committee is proposing to set up a conference working group to coordinate logistics, marketing and speakers for the event.
If you are interested in supporting with the organisation and promotion of this conference, and earning some CPD points in the process, please contact the Professional Engagement Sub-Committee chair, Sam McAleese: sam.mcaleese@mottmac.com.
